Spike Lee portrays Mookie, a resident of a predominately black Brooklyn neighborhood.  He works for Sal (Danny Aiello) as a pizza deliveryman to support his baby son and its mother, Tina (Rosie Perez).  Sal and his two sons are Italian-Americans, and their pizzeria has fed the community for twenty-five years.

Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito) launches a boycott against Sal because the pizzeria's walls are covered with photos of Italians, not African-Americans.  Although Buggin' Out has just a few supporters, the death of a young black teen in front of Sal's restaurant enrages the community, who seek to vent their anger on a hot summer day.

Do the Right Thing was nominated for two Oscars and four Golden Globes.  The picture was a commercial success, earning five times its $6.5 million budget.
