Clapet (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) owns a tenement in post-apocalyptic France. After the extinction of most animals, meat has replaced the euro as currency. Clapet has capitalized on that by opening a butcher shop on the building's ground floor.
He does not rely upon a farm or distributor for his inventory however, but instead hires handymen who are fattened up, chopped apart, and sold to tenets. His latest hire is Louison (Dominique Pinon), a well-liked worker who is smitten by Clapet's daughter, Julie (Marie-Laure Dougnac). The feeling is mutual, but can Julie rescue Louison before he is transformed into mincemeat?
Delicatessen was a commercial success, more than tripling its nearly $5 million budget.
