On his 21st birthday, in front of his mom, dad, sister and guests, Max tries to hang himself. It's his eighth suicide attempt as he is desperately seeking a peaceful white light. Max is quickly sent back to an asylum by his family and it is there he meets and instantly falls in love with Grace, who is also suicidal and slightly strange as she carries around a teddy bear, which she treats as her child. Max courts Grace and eventually proposes to her. The two quickly wed and a smitten Max makes it his mission to give her reasons to live. He starts off by getting them out of the asylum and as the two escape Max seeks various cures for Grace. Max tries to get Grace to see the beauty in nature as the two move in with Max’s family, Max consults a shaman, a faith healer, and a self-help coach all in a bid to get Grace to love life. But unfortunately for Max, Grace's demons keep overcoming his cures and Max is at his wit's end. Will he fail? Is there to be no white light? A visit to Grace's institutionalized mother gives Max a clue.
