Charlie Wilson's War
A corrupt congressman develops a special interest in the Afghan-Soviet war.
Based on real life events in the early 1980s, Tom Hanks portrays Congressman Charlie Wilson, a relative nobody in politics whose illicit activities generally go unnoticed. He is a womanizer addicted to cocaine, who willfully accepts bribes from anyone in exchange for legislative favors.
Wilson begins a romantic relationship with Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts), who sympathizes with the plight of the Afghan people. She encourages Charlie to advocate increased US intervention there, and so he uses his connection to a CIA agent to do so. When his past personal exploits are made public though, his task becomes more difficult.
Charlie Wilson's War was nominated for an Oscar and 5 Golden Globes. The picture earned $119 million at the box office.
