At the age of seven Anna Marie Duke was essentially adopted by her managers, John and Ether Ross (Howard Hesseman and Deborah May), rarely meeting her depressed mother or alcoholic father. The Ross' groomed her to be an Oscar award winner and the star of her own sitcom, but not without psychological repercussions.
As a teenager Duke began to show signs of mental illness, marrying a virtual stranger and exhibiting severe mood swings. By the late 1960s Duke had entered a downward spiral, only to be rescued by a therapist who prescribed her lithium years later.
