John Hurt portrays Father Christopher, a Catholic missionary who runs a Rwandan school. He is accompanied by Joe Connor (Hugh Dancy), another westerner, who is an idealistic English teacher. Both men are in the country at a very bad time, during a genocide that resulted in the deaths of nearly one million Tutsis-- an ethnic minority.
Father Christopher has decided to transform the school into a safe haven for Tutsis, though when its UN protectors flee after five days, the father and Joe must decide whether they will remain and potentially die at the hands of Hutus, or flee to their homelands in fear.
