It's 1955, New York city down-and-out private detective Harry Angel is commissioned by attorney Herman Winesap to meet a client, Louis Cyphre, at a Harlem church. The year is 1955. New York city down-and-out private detective Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke) is paid a visit by attorney Herman Winesap (Dann Florek) who commissions Angel to meet with a client, at a Harlem church. The client is none other than the mysterious, elegant Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro), sporting a beard and long hair and nails and carrying a cane. Cyphre wants a singer, Johnny Favorite, found. Favorite's injuries in World War II, have apparently caused him a loss of memory, which prevented him from fulfilling his contract to Cyphre.
In New Orleans, Angel discovers that Favorite was deeply involved in the occult, participating in many voodoo rituals and befriending its practitioners, such as Margaret Krusemark (Charlotte Rampling) and Evangeline Proudfoot, whose daughter Epiphany (Lisa Bonet) seems to have been the product of Evangeline and Johnny's union in such a ritual. Yet every time Angel meets with one of Johnny's friends in an attempt to find out the truth about him and his whereabouts, they turn up dead...
