Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) was born in North Carolina and raised in poverty.  Throughout his youth, Lucas partook in criminal activities and eventually relocated to New York City, where he connected with Harlem's notorious gangster Bumpy Johnson (Clarence Williams III).

Johnson took a liking to the young man and became Frank's mentor, imparting street wisdom upon him.  After Bumpy's death, his monopoly over the city's heroin supply ended, and every noteworthy dealer battled for the former kingpin's throne, including Frank.

American Gangster was nominated for two Oscars, three Golden Globes, a Grammy, and an MTV Movie Award.  The picture more than doubled its hefty $100 million production cost, grossing $266 million internationally.
