Some Want a Piece of the Pie. He Wants the Whole Bakery All the King's Men: A Universal Story of Power & Corruption

Modeled after real-life Louisiana depression-era governor Huey Long, All the King's Men tells the story of Willie Stark (Sean Penn), a small-town attorney persuaded into running for governor. At first he plays a fair game, but when newspaper reporter Jack Burden (Jude Law) informs Stark that his small-town, na�ve persona is being utilized by another candidate to split votes, he becomes enraged. From that point forward he fights a full-fledged, gritty political battle against his opponents. His fiery speeches are aimed toward the state's populace: impoverished, working-class, and uneducated voters desperate for change.

Stark's strategy works. After being elected he begins initiating social projects that enhance his image as a friend of the downtrodden. The governor builds a hospital and appoints Jack as his advisor, while Stark's intimidating driver and bodyguard, Roderick 'Sugar Boy' Ellis (Jackie Earle Haley) ensures the leader's safety. He wears beautiful clothing while delivering speeches that inspire his disenfranchised constituents during a time of great despair.

The reality of Louisiana's condition remains bleak however, no matter how many buildings are erected or handouts given. The governor also begins to reveal his true nature to colleagues, one quite different from the benevolent orator so many grew to love. Underneath the surface Starks is undoubtedly more corrupt than his adversaries, and Jack's conscientious stepfather, Judge Irwin (Anthony Hopkins) intends to confront Starks publicly regarding his misdeeds. Whether wrong or right, moral or immoral one thing is for sure: Willie Starks will not go out without a fight.
