While many films examine lightening from a purely scientific standpoint, director Jennifer Baichwal presents a more philosophical view of the natural phenomenon. In her documentary she interviews a multitude of subjects, who have all been affected by lightening at some point in their lives.
Among Baichwal's interviewees are novelist and screenwriter Paul Auster, who witnessed his best friend die due to a lightening bolt, while dramatist James O'Reilly describes being struck by lightening and living to tell about it. Other segments include a Rwandan tribe that worships lightening, and a group of Mexican mothers whose sons were killed by it.
