In 14th century Europe, William Thatcher (Heath Ledger in one of his first lead roles), a squire to the knight Sir Ector, decides to don his master’s armor when his master is killed in the joust before the final.
William wins, and this whets his appetite to compete and win more prizes, though he knows very well that only those of noble descent are allowed to enter the tournaments. He enlists the help of his master’s old squires; Roland (Mark Addy) and Wat (Alan Tudyk), to teach him to joust, and train him to yield a sword. On the way to his first tournament in Rouen, the three misfits encounter a gambler who goes by the name of Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany playing the author of the Canterbury Tales), and save him from his debtors which convinces a destitute Chaucer to forge a ‘patent of nobility’ declaring William "Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein" from Gelderland.
