Based on the true-life events in 1979 in the small town of East Woburn, Massachusetts, when two drinking wells supplying the town with water are found to contain industrial solvents. The soaring rate of leukemia deaths amongst the town's children and the later discovery of toxic waste produced by the two big factories on the border of town, lead the mother of a dead Lukemia child-victim Anne Anderson (Kathleen Quinlan) to bring a lawsuit against the two corporate giants.
The problem is that those corporations have the money, connections and legal teams to 'buy' their brand of justice, and crush the hopes of the powerless, truth-seeking citizens. A battle of wills ensues between Schlichtmann (Travolta) a small firm personal injury lawyer, and the mammoth Jerome Facher (Robert Duvall) who has the money and clout of the corporations behind him.
