One Accident, Three Lives Thrown Into Limbo 21 Grams: Life Is More Than A Number

"They say we all lose 21 grams at the exact moment of our death... everyone.
The weight of a stack of nickels. The weight of a chocolate bar. The weight of a hummingbird..."

Based on the work of Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts in the early twentieth century, who weighed dying subjects in an attempt to prove the material value of the soul, "21 Grams" takes MacDougall's wild experiments into the realm of viewer fantasy.

Paul Rivers is a college math professor and a resolute smoker, who is close to death from heart failure as he bides his time waiting on the heart transplant list. His loveless marriage to English immigrant Mary is on ice as well, while she hopes to become pregnant with his child through artificial insemination.

Cristina Peck seems to be a typical housewife. She and her husband have two young daughters, and they seem to lead the perfect life.

Ex-con Jack Jordan has spent more time in jail than out, but seems to have found his true calling. He and his wife Marianne struggle to provide for their two children while Jack works in a church, spreading the gospel, and helping kids by recognizing the ones that seem to be heading toward the same kind of trouble he's been in.

One accident will bind these three lives irrevocably, catapulting them into each others' orbits as one comes to grips with his mortality, another finds peace in the present and the possibility of a future, while the third's faith is put to the ultimate test.

How much does life weigh? How much does guilt weigh? Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu will blur the lines that distinguish past, present and future in a style that beckons audiences to disregard formula-based answers and instead seek their own.

"21 Grams" offers compelling performances by three-time Academy Award nominee Sean Penn, Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, and award-winning actress Naomi Watts in this 2003 release. Grossing $16,162,920.
