During the filming of Being John Malkovic, screenplay writer Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage) is commissioned to write a film adaptation to Susan Orlean (Meryl Streep)'s 'The Orchid Thief'. Yet discovering that her book has no real narrative for him to work with Charlie suffers writer's block. Enter his twin brother Donald (also Nicolas Cage) who all of a sudden decides to become a screenwriter himself and enrolls in a Robert McKee writing seminar, managing to produce a clichéd psychological-thriller that gets snapped up for seven figures. The more Charlie writes about Susan and her book, the more he feels close to her, and in a bid to overcome his block he tries to go and interview her. Yet, being inept socially, and a walking disaster with the ladies, as he's terrified to talk to women, Charlie sends Donald instead to interview her, resulting in their discovering that Susan is in a love affair with her book's protagonist, Laroche (Chris Cooper)...
