What Just Happened

Ben, an around-the-way Hollywood producer that's seen it all, is trying to: get his new film Fiercely to win at Cannes, get Bruce Willis to shave his beard for his next movie, break free from his 2nd ex-wife, and deal with a daughter who became a woman when he wasn't looking, a director that wants to kill Sean Penn and his dog, and a studio that is quickly losing patience...

Based on Art Linson's book What Just Happened? Bitter Hollywood Tales from the Front Line, What Just Happened shines a light on some of Art's experiences as a Hollywood producer. Director Barry Levinson reunites with De Niro who plays Art's character, eleven years after their last meeting for Wag the Dog, and 12 years since collaborating on Sleepers. This insider-look at the whacky world of Hollywood is a tongue-in-cheek satire of the politics of the business side of the silver screen.

We live a week through the eyes of Ben (De Niro), an aging-producer who is juggling a number of could-be-catastrophes simultaneously; a British director (Michael Wincott) strung on drugs and fighting impatient studio exec Lou (Catherine Keener) on every call, an ex-wife Kelly (Robin Wright Penn) who Ben is trying to break free from, yet discovers her affair with Scott Solomon (Stanley Tucci), a married screenwriter Ben had worked with, also a movie that might get cancelled because Bruce Willis (playing himself) won't shave his beard, then Ben's daughter, Zoe (Kristen Stewart) who seems to have become a woman overnight, and add to that trying to get his latest film 'Fiercely' to win at Cannes, yet the director chooses to kill off the lead character Sean Penn (also playing himself) and Sean's dog, defying the studio's express wishes. Will he win the Palme D'Or? Will he make it to Vanity Fair's cover as one of the most influential producers of his time? Or will all this juggling prove too much even  for a weathered producer such as he?
