62 year-old professor of economics at Connecticut College, Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins), is really lonely since his wife passed away- he’s even trying to learn the piano as a way to connect to her.

Sent by his department to New York to present a paper he co-authored, he finds his apartment inhabited by Tarek (Haaz Sleiman), a Syrian musician, and Zainab (Dania Gurira), his Senegalese girlfriend. After realizing they’ve been scammed, they hurry to pack their things but Walter allows them to stay a few nights.

As a thank you, Tarek starts teaching him the African drum, which starts doing wonders for Walter’s mood and psyche. After catching Tarek perform at a few jazz clubs, Walter begins to feel empowered enough to join in on the drum circles in Central Park.

Yet one day Tarek is picked up by the police, claiming he jumped a turnstile- yet in any case, he is illegal, without documentation, and after being taken to a detention facility in Queens, most likely he will end up being deported. But then Tarek’s beautiful mother Mouna (Hiam Abbass) arrives in New York, hoping to find a way to salvage the situation…
