When an undercover French journalist, Freidoune Sahebjam (Jim Caviezel)’s car breaks down in a small southwestern village in 1986 Iran as Khomeini ascends to power, a persistent local woman, Zahra (Shohreh Aghdashloo), pleads with him to follow her to a place where she can tell him of the most heinous crime that resulted in the stoning to death of her innocent niece Soraya (Mozhan Marnò), because her abusive husband wanted to wed a 14-year-old girl.

Having been forced to marry Ali through an arranged marriage in the first place, Soraya would not give Ali the divorce he required to marry the 14-year-old he desired- not with two sons between them that need taking care of. Thus Ali had to find an alternative as he couldn’t repay Soraya’s dowry. The solution comes in the form of the newly-appointed Mullah [local religious figure], who schemes with Ali to start a rumor accusing Soraya of adultery, and since she won’t be able to prove her innocence, she will be stoned to death, clearing the way for Ali to marry whomever he desires…
