When Granger Woodruff's (Jesse Metcalfe) credit card is denied at a dinner intended to woo a potential business client, he phones the number printed on its backside. He reaches an Indian call center, where Priya R. Sethi (Shriya Saran) answers with a flawless American accent. She works for Citci One's fraud protection services, and needs to verify a few recent purchases with Granger.

As Priya scans through the caller's recent charges she becomes strangely infatuated by the American's voice, and simultaneously begins a web search to learn more about him. Despite living in Mumbai, Priya fibs that she resides in San Francisco; during the weeks that follow both play a childish game of phone tag that neither believe will result in a real-life meet up.

So when Granger informs the call center employee that he's coming to San Francisco on business and would like to meet, her charade seems inevitably doomed. Zia (Tara Sharma), Priya's best friend encourages her to forget about the Anglo and move on, and she temporarily does. In the process, however, could Priya possibly forfeit her soul mate? She leaves no time to find out, boards a plane to the United States, and prepares for destiny to take its course.

Aside from facing her parents later on, a more immediate problem lurks ahead. Granger only knows Priya by her generic, Americanized, call center alias: Jennifer David; subsequently he has no idea that she is Indian. How will Granger respond to not only an interracial relationship, but also her dishonesty? Even if he forgives his long distance sweetheart's transgressions, how can Priya escape a prearranged marriage back home? With her mother and father en route to the United States these questions will soon be answered.
