The Mistress of Spices stars the beautiful Aishwarya Rai and Dylan McDermott in a romantic comedy that attempts to combine both Western and Indian culture set in the ethnically diverse city of San Francisco.

Rai portrays Tilo, a stunningly attractive young Indian woman born into poverty, and kidnapped at an early age. After escaping from her captors she was adopted by the priestess of a mystical cult, who believed in the power of spices and their ability to heal. Tilo was no stranger to the supernatural and at a young age she discovered her ability to foresee the future, a skill that prompted her kidnapping by a gang of bandits.

After completing her studies with the priestess she, along with the other mistresses, are sent to various locations across the globe. Tilo was sent to San Francisco where she opened a spice store in a bustling, immigrant-populated section of town. The shop was dubbed Spice Bazaar and quickly amassed a crowd of quirky, though loyal patrons: a cabbie named Haroun, an affectionate grandfather, and a young African-American couple hopelessly in love.

As a mistress of spices, Tilo was required to take an oath that she would never leave her shop, allow humans to touch her, or use her powers for personal gain. Overstepping any of these boundaries would reverse the effects of the spices, and rather than good luck, they would wreck havoc upon its users.

Tilo has no problem upholding her oath until a macho architect named Doug (McDermott) crashes outside her shop and requires medical aid, she instantly begins to fall in love with him. Slowly, but surely, she breaks each of her oaths and witnesses her customers lives crumble one by one. In order to repair the damage done to those around her she must earn the spices forgiveness, a task that may require an unimaginable sacrifice.

The Mistress of Spices is rated PG-13 for some violent images and scenes of sensuality.
