It is the early 1970s and Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) has just graduated from medical school, but struggles to find work in his native Scotland.  Seeking employment and adventure, he travels to war-torn Uganda to work as a medical missionary.

Once there fate will have it that he befriends the country's ruthless yet charismatic dictator, Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker),  eventually becoming his trusted personal physician.  Although Garrigan has mixed emotions concerning Amin's political maneuvers, he remains loyal to the ruler and advising him to the best of his ability.  That changes after Garrigan falls for Amin's wife, Kay (Kerry Washington) and causes her to get pregnant. Kay is found out while trying top get an abortion and subsequently Garrigan discovers her mutilated body. Will Idi discover it was his personal physician that was Kay's lover? And what could the Amin's punishment for the young Scotsman who took such good care of his health and welfare be?

The Last King of Scotland won an Oscar and a Golden Globe.  The picture earned eight-times its $6 million budget at the box office.
