Oscar-winner Adrien Brody stars in the 2005 psychological thriller “The Jacket,” partly based on a British 1915 Jack London novel, ‘The Jacket’ a.k.a. ‘The Star Rover’. The film shares the novel’s idea of a person experiencing out-of-body time-travel while in an intolerably tight straitjacket. The film is said to be “loosely based on a true story that became a Jack London story”- the true story of Ed Morrell, who told London about San Quentin prison's inhumane use of tight straitjackets. Jack Starks just escaped a close shave with death- a bullet to the head. A veteran of the 1991 Gulf War, Starks returns to his hometown of Vermont with amnesia in 1992, only to be faced with a crime he does not remember. Jack is charged and tried for murdering a police officer, and is subsequently acquitted on grounds of insanity. Based on his verdict, Jack is incarcerated in an institution for the criminally insane, and soon Starks becomes subject to the experimentations of psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Becker. Injected with an experimental drug and put into a straitjacket; Jack is locked in a morgue drawer every night. In his confinement, and after the torment of having to relive terrible images from the war, Jack experiences a release and seems to have been mysteriously transported to the future. There he forms a tender relationship with the die-hard yet beautiful Jackie. Fearful for Jackie’s fate, as well as his own, Jack must use his new-found talent to figure out what happened to him. All in the hopes that, by knowing in due time, he can somehow alter the course of what is to come. Brimming with electrifying performances by Adrien Brody, Keira Knightley, Daniel Craig, and Kristofferson, “The Jacket” grossed $2,723,682 on its opening weekend. It totaled $6,303,762 in the US with gross revenues of $14,822,463 worldwide. This movie is rated R for violence, language, brief sexuality and nudity.
