Shirley MacLaine reprises her role as Aurora with this film focusing on her relationship with her three grandchildren. One grandson, Tommy (George Newbern), is in jail, another, Teddy (MacKenzie Astin) has a job with no future living just above the poverty line, and her rebellious granddaughter Melanie (Juliette Lewis) seems bent on giving Aurora as much grief as her deceased mother Emma did.

As for Aurora herself, her affair with The General (Donald Moffat) is quickly fading, which opens the door to a brief excursion with her analyst (Bill Paxton), as she confesses to her former lover, astronaut Garrett (Jack Nicholson) that she is still searching for her soul-mate.
