The End of the Affair is a screen adaptation of novelist Graham Greenes identically titled book published in 1951. Set both during and after World War II, Greenes work was part biographical and like him the main character, Maurice Bendrix was a prominent author.

Bendrix, a married man, had a passionate affair with his mistress, Sarah Miles that lasted approximately two years. However the affair ended abruptly one night while Sarah was visiting Maurices home, which was struck by a bomb, and subsequently injured him.

In panic, Sarah ran down a flight of stairs, only to find her love bloodied and no longer breathing. She ran back into the bedroom, got on her knees, and vowed to God that if he saved Maurices life, she would halt her affair with him, and finally wed her loyal boyfriend, Henry Miles.

At that very moment Bendrix miraculously entered the room, yet he was dumbfounded when Sarah ceased all communication with him. It was clear that Sarah still had feelings for Maurice, and he certainly felt the same way. For the years following their breakup Bendrix lived in deep depression and resentment, never able to remove his mistress from memory.

Fast forward some years later. Henry has summoned Bendrixs help, suspicious that Sarah is having an affair with another man. He seizes this moment and hires a private detective, deceitfully claiming that it is for Henrys best interest. Yet Bendrix intends to use the detectives findings to win Sarah back, and so the pursuit begins. The sleuth, Parkis alongside his son follow their target, discovering that she is not romancing another man, but visiting Father Richard Smythe, a priest.

Bendrix does not hesitate to confront Sarah, diligently attempting to convince her to stay with him. Still, the issue is not whether or not she loves Bendrix; Sarah willfully admits that she has not forgotten about him. Eventually he does persuade her to join him on a weekend vacation, prompting Henry to track both of them down. The result is not necessarily a predictable one.

The End of the Affair was critically acclaimed, earning 2 Oscar nominations in addition to 4 Golden Globe nominations.

The picture is rated R for scenes of strong sexuality.
