Whilst staging their very final train robbery, the notorious Missouri James gang meets Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) for the first time. Bob Ford grew up idolizing Jesse James (Brad Pitt) and wants nothing more than to be a part of the James gang, as he convinces his brother Charley (Sam Rockwell), already a member of the gang, to vouch for him- though Jesse’s older brother Frank James (Sam Shepard) makes it abundantly clear, that despite the setbacks with finding less loot on the train than they intended, this was going to be their very last heist.

Dick Liddil (Paul Schneider) reveals to Robert that he and another member of the James gang were looking to turn Jesse in for a substantial reward, something Jesse was always wary of and looking out for. So before the plan hatches, Jesse pretty much extracts all the details by his sheer power of presence around those that know of something going on.

In the meantime, Robert Ford watches all of this silently as he notices Jesse start to crack and show signs of paranoia. Yet the closer Robert Ford got to Jesse the more disillusioned he became with his once-idol, rousing him to kill the living legend, receive a pardon and get $10,000 in the process…
