The Addams Family began in 1938 as a conception of cartoonist Charles Addams. It was first featured in The New Yorker magazine and continued its run until Addams death in 1988. However, most individuals probably remember the black and white television adaptation, which was produced between 1964 and 1966.

For those unfamiliar with this dark comedy classic here is some background information. The Addams are a gothic, eccentric family whose favorite pastime includes hanging out at commentaries. They walk a fine line between the living and the dead and exist in a world typically of opposites. For example, while most parents would tell their children not to play with their food, daughter and son duo Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) are encouraged to do so. In fact, its hard for them not to since whatever is on their plates appears to be alive and moving.

Gomez (Ral Juli) and Morticia (Anjelica Huston) are the ghoulish parents of the clan. Despite their strangeness, and even resemblance to death, the two are a happy, almost admirable couple with seemingly great chemistry. We also cannot forget Thing (Christopher Hart), a bodiless hand that inhabits the familys dark and dreary mansion.

However the focal point of the cartoons film adaptation is Gomezs bald and goofy brother, Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd). 25 years prior Fester disappeared, presumably somewhere in the Bermuda triangle. Before his brothers disappearance Gomez had a falling out with Fester, and has had little concern in locating him since.

Reconciliation is inevitable though when the missing uncle surprisingly returns. Everyone is eager to welcome Fester back, but there is something not quite right about him. When Gomez attempts to reminisce about childhood events, the new Fester cannot recollect anything. More strangely is that Fester, in cohorts with family nemesis, neighbor, and attorney Tully Alfordm (Dan Hedaya) successfully attempts to evict his family from their mansion.

Devoid of their savings and homeless each of the Addams must seek employment. Thing finds work as a deliveryman for Federal Express, while Morticia unintentionally spooks out a class of kindergartners. Soon the family realizes that they are not cut out for the normal 9-5, and that they must get to the bottom of Festers strange actions.

Moviegoers met the 1991 interpretation of the classic work with open arms, purchasing an impressive $191 million worth of tickets worldwide. The picture was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe, and MTV Movie Award.

The Addams Family is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 99 minutes.
