This film is about a group of hedonistic middle-aged friends who gather each night on a luxurious houseboat for dancing, love-making and smoking hashish. When a young news reporter visits the houseboat to write a story about them, she is outraged . An award-winning landmark of Egyptian cinema, Adrift On The Nile is based on the novel by Naguib Mahfouz, the Nobel Laureate author. Lush and vividly photographed, it tells the story of a group of elitist, upper-class friends who gather for a night of hedonistic celebration on an ornate houseboat. Visited by a young reporter, who wants to write a journalistic piece on the group, they are confronted by their growing awareness of their own pain and alienation. Set in 1967, just before the start of the war, the film offers a glimpse of a society in the midst of social upheaval and an aristocracy who are painfully aware of their imminent decay.
