The only role to win Robert Duvall an Academy Award out of his 6 nominations. Duvall plays Mac Sledge, a worn-out C&W singer who threw his career away on booze. He wakes up with a hangover in a tiny Texas motel, and instead of choosing to scram, he offers the owner, Rosa Lee (Tess Harper), to work off his debt. He ends up marrying Rosa and taking care of her son Sonny.
His ex-wife, also a C&W singer, comes to perform in town, and Mac tries to go in the hopes of catching a glimpse of his lost and confused daughter. Meanwhile, young singers are starting to seek Mac for inspiration and guidance.
Through his love for this woman he will change his self-destructive ways and promise himself never to bring pain into anyone's life again.
