A computer reseller named Kevin Jones purchases a number of used machines auctioned off by a large financial institution. Along with the computers are a number of floppy disks, whose contents have presumably been wiped…or so they think. When Jones pops one of the obsolete disks in, he discovers a cache of confidential data, some of it indicating scandalous money laundering between prominent individuals and seedy foreign governments. Hoping to cash in on his find, Kevin attempts to resell the floppies to the bank, leading to him being harassed and intimidated. Eventually, the bank does pay Jones a respectable fee for the data. While they can finally erase the contents of those disks, they unfortunately cannot erase the data from the computer salesman’s mind, even if he has no intention of revealing his findings. Not too long after the settlement Jones is found dead of an alleged drunken car accident. An investigative journalist named Mort Whitman is not convinced, however, as she has observed a number of peculiarities surrounding Kevin’s death. Whitman narrates and generally guides the film, interviewing individuals such as Jimmy Black, one of the salesman’s closest associates. Spooked is based on Ian Wishart’s novel, The Paradise Conspiracy, the true story of Paul White, a man who like the film’s lead character, bought a supply of old computers containing confidential data and, subsequently, died months later under what seemed to be suspicious circumstances.
