After the family moves from Europe, his wife's depression takes over and she leaves her husband and son alone to fend for themselves.

Raimond comes of age in Victoria where he lives with his dad while his mother Christina, estranged from Romulus, is in Melbourne.

Romulus is near despair when Christina takes up with his best friend’s brother, who suggests he send for a new wife from back home.
