Love, loyalty, honor, and the kind of peril and hardship one is prepared to face in order to prove their worthiness of forgiveness- all of these values are spun into this Sino-Japanese film that captures a wide spectrum of human emotions.

Gouichi Takata (Takakura) is an aging Japanese father who learns that his son Kenichi (Kiichi Nakai) has been diagnosed with liver cancer. When Gouichi's wife died, his grief caused him to retreat to a small fishing town, effectively abandoning Kenichi, a choice that Kenichi never forgave him for.

His son's wife Rie gives her father-in-law a video by Kenichi, that Gouichi may better understand what drives his son. The video is of Li Jiamin, a Nuo opera artiste promising Kenichi that if he would return next year he would perform Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles for his pleasure.

In his quest for his son's forgiveness Gouichi travels to China's Yunnan province to film Li Jiamin's performance for his dying son, yet as life would teach us; things are never as easy as they seem...
