The pictures cast includes an exceptional roster of A-list actors such as Stiller himself, Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, Rene Zellweger, and Steve Zahn. 90s music lovers will no doubt enjoy the soundtrack that launched singer Lisa Loebs career and also features the likes of U2, Lenny Kravitz, Big Mountain and many more.

Lelania Pierce (Ryder), Troy Dyer (Hawke), Vickie Milner (Garofalo), Sammy Gray (Zahn), and Michael Grates (Stiller) are five twenty year olds who have evolved out of the eighties, in some cases completed college, and are now trying to figure out their purposes in life. Lelania has just finished her studies in film and graduated as valedictorian of her class. Unfortunately, steady work as a filmmaker is not easily obtainable and she finds herself lounging at her boyfriends or parents house.

That changes however when she flicks a cigarette but into Michael Grates car causing him to crash. Ordinarily this would be a stressful situation, but for Lelania it morphs into an unlikely job opportunity. While discussing damages Michael learns that Lelania is an aspiring filmmaker capturing the day-to-day lives of her friends. The idea fascinates Michael, who works for an MTV-like cable television station and he offers his assistance.

Meanwhile Lelanias grungy boyfriend, a struggling, jobless musician named Troy becomes jealous of Michaels relationship with his sweetheart. This often erupts into confrontations between the two, despite Michaels strictly business rapport with Lelania.

Vickie (Garofalo) is also in the crew, a sexoholic who fears she has contracted HIV after a man she slept with is diagnosed with AIDS. This forces Vickie to reexamine her chronic promiscuity. Alongside Vickie is Sammy (Zahn), a homosexual who remains single because he is afraid to come out to his parents. Together they will attempt to find contentment in life and may or may not be successful.

Reality Bites is rated PG-13 for some language, drug content, and sensuality. Its runtime is 99 minutes.
