Robert is a brilliant mathematician who has made groundbreaking discoveries in his field at the young age of 22, his work has earned him recognition across the globe and a faculty position in the University of Chicagos math department.

At the height of his career, however, Robert starts exhibiting signs of mental illness, specifically delusions; and the man who once spent hours writing complex theorems on sheets of paper regresses into a recluse filling notebooks with nonsense.

Meanwhile, Roberts daughter, Catherine shares her fathers love of math and is possibly equally as skilled in the field as her father, but she rarely reveals it to Robert, fearful that she will disappoint him.

In a bid to escape her fathers shadow, Catherine attends graduate school at the prestigious Northwestern University. However, when she returns one cold winter and discovers her father scribbling equations on a freezing front porch she realizes that he desperately needs her care.

For the following years Roberts daughter remains by his side, listening to him ramble about incoherent ideas and sharing her mathematical work with him.

Though delusional, Robert occasionally has moments of lucidity; at one point he was able to return to teaching for an entire year before relapsing. Eventually Robert, passes away, leaving behind his loving daughter who is now beginning to display the symptoms of the familys mental disease.

The professors loyal former student, Harold Hal Dobbs, is convinced that despite Roberts illness he had discovered important theories during his moments of lucidity and academic disciple starts rummaging through his professors desk drawers, hoping to find unearthed work of genius.

Initially Catherine is suspicious of Hal and believes he is trying to exploit her fathers work for his own good but in time the couple form a close bond, strengthened by their admiration of the same man.

With Hals companionship and understanding Catherine finally discovers her hidden genius and quite possibly find love.
