Loosely based on the true story of a mysterious girl who appeared in England in 1817 speaking only an unidentified language and wearing exotic garments, 'Princess Caraboo' was taken in by the Worralls, who doted her believing that high-society's interest in her is bound to bring business opportunities.

Appearing in a turban and speaking gibberish, the young woman referring to herself as Caraboo (Phoebe Cates) was tried for vagrancy and begging. Yet the magistrates believe that she is an Asian princess that was kidnapped by pirates and managed to escape their ship in  the English Channel to swim to shore. The Worralls (Jim Broadbent and Wendy Hughes) lavish upon her the care due to royalty, as more and more Caraboo becomes a sensation with high-society. However, the Worralls' Greek butler Frixos (Kevin Kline) thinks her an impostor, and tries to catch her out by enlisting the help of academic linguist (John Lithgow) to expose her fraud. Caraboo manages to convince the linguist, the Worralls' skeptic Greek butler, and the Prince Regent (John Sessions) yet one reporter, Gutch (Stephen Rea) seems bent on finding the truth...
