Martin Vail (Richard Gere) is a cocky lawyer who takes on the case of Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), an altar boy accused of murdering the priest who took him in. While the public has already condemned Stampler, the lawyer who initially pursued his case merely for fame begins to believe in his client's actual innocence.
Vail discovers that the priest had many enemies, including a district attorney whose realty deals were hampered by him. The priest has also molested many children, including Stampler. A potential third witness complicates the case even further, but legal procedure forces Vail to take the case in a new direction.
Primal Fear was awarded a Golden Globe and nominated for an Oscar and an MTV Movie Award. The picture earned $102 million internationally, more than three times its budget.
