Based on author Donna Woolfolk Cross’s historical novel about the controversial possibility of a woman being appointed pope for two years, 855-857 (Vatican-rebuffed Pope John Anglicus) - until she allegedly went into labor in public…

Growing up with an abundance of intelligence, and no means to utilize it; due to the time’s oppression of women, as well as her father (Iain Glen)’s special disregard for females in general, Joan (Johanna Wokalek) disguised herself as a boy to be able to study scripture, participate in discussions, and learn the art of healing- things afforded only men during the 9th century.

Under the patronage of her teacher, and some claim the father of the child, Count Gerold (David Wenham) she continued studying in Greece before travelling to Rome where she is said to have met Pope Sergius II (John Goodman) and cured him with her herbal remedies of his gout. This prompted The Pope to make her his own personal physician, before promoting her to be his Nomenclator. However King of the Franks, Lothar I (Gerald Alexander Held), and his ally who sought the papacy for himself, Anastasius (Anatole Taubman), planned to poison the pope, hoping that this would place Anastasius in his desired garb. But to their surprise, as well as everyone else’s, Joan was chosen as pontificate…
