In the role that won him his first Academy Award, Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at the biggest Philadelphia law firm. Beckett first hides from his colleagues the fact that he is homosexual, then the fact that he has AIDS, then when his lesions become visible, he hides himself entirely, working from home. When an important document that he handed in goes missing, the firm partners decide that this is grounds for firing him.

With none of the lawyers wanting to touch his case, because of the big name of his ex-firm, Beckett turns to a black personal injury lawyer who advertises on TV, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). Initially Joe refuses the case, due in part to his homophobia, and fear of contracting the disease, but eventually when he realizes that the discrimination Beckett faces is not unlike the discrimination he has had to and still does face, Miller becomes the one lawyer  who will take his case...
