Seymour 'Sy' Parrish (Robin Williams) is a lonely man with an empty life, save for his job as a photo-technician at a department store. Over a period of time he becomes obsessed with one family that are regular customers- the Yorkin family: Nina (Connie Nielsen), Will Yorkin (Michael Vartan), and their son Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy's obsession begins around the time Jake is born, as he imagines the happiness within the household, even making secret copies of their photos which he keeps in a giant collage in his apartment.

Yet his life spirals out of control when his boss Bill (Gary Cole) fires Sy from work for not being able to explain the enormous amount of extra prints that cannot be accounted for, while at the same time the image of his 'ideal' family is shattered when he finds out that Will Yorkin is cheating on his wife. The thought of Will who has everything Sy longs for, yet does not appreciate what he has, in effect overloads his already fragile mind, as Sy's last thread to sanity is broken...
