In 2007s Om Shanti Om Om Prakash Makhija (Shahrukh Khan) is a struggling, up and coming Bollywood star in the seventies with a major crush on actress Shanti Priya (Deepika Padukone). When he finally gets a chance to meet her he is elated, and in fear of rejection, lies about his background claiming that he too is a major industry player. Eventually, however, he reveals his lie but it is irrelevant: Shanti already accepts him as a kind and sweet man.
After meeting with Shanti on a few different occasions Om begins to believe that he may finally be able to marry the actress, something he has dreamed about for years. That changes one day when he arrives at one of Shantis shoots, and is treated coldly by her. Accidentally he overhears a conversation between her and fellow Bollywood star Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). Om learns that the actor and actress are secretly married, and that they are intentionally keeping this from the public in fear of a backlash; specifically, Mukesh believes that when an adored man or woman is seen as unobtainable, moviegoers loose interest.
Learning that Shanti was married was the first blow. The second blow occurred when Om discovered his sweetheart was also pregnant with Mukeshs baby, and insists that she keep it a secret. Yet Shanti is relentless and demands that the two have a pubic, traditional wedding. Mukesh seemingly agrees while on the set for his newest film, which he says he will cancel in order to perform the ceremony. This is not his true intention, however, and he ignites the building on fire with Shanti trapped inside. From afar Om notices that his love is trapped and runs into the burning building to save her. After a genuine rescue effort Om also dies in the fire, alongside Shanti.
Following that we are transported about 20 years into the future and meet Om Kapoor (also portrayed by Khan). Om, referred to by his fans as OK is an esteemed, somewhat pompous Bollywood actor who has recurring memories of a past life and a womans murder; the memories are very detailed but, nevertheless, he has no idea what they mean. After meeting seasoned actor Mukesh Mehra, now a big industry executive, OK realizes he is a reincarnate of Om Kapoor, and that it his duty is to bring Mukesh to justice for the murder of Shanti.
To do this he recruits the help of a young girl named Sandhya (Padukone once again) who will pretend to be Shantis ghost. With hours of training, most of it hopeless, Sandy at last morphs into a viable clone. OKs plan launches, his premonitions are confirmed, and Mukesh is terrified beyond belief. Still, proving Mukeshs guilt to authorities will be a difficult task. Can justice be served?
Om Shanti Om is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 162 minutes.
