Mandira Bedi portrays cricket fanatic Meera Achrekar in Meerabai Not Out, Bollywood's take on Bend It Like Beckham. In her mid-30s, Meera teaches mathematics at an all boys school, cleverly integrating the sport into her lessons. The students are delighted by Meera, but her callous mother (Vandana Gupte) and brother (Mahesh Manjrekar) remain disappointed, specifically because she refuses to marry. If you ask Achrekar however, she is already spoken for -- and her spouse's name is cricket, which also happens to be her religion. Even if Meera did ever decide to pursue a husband it would be her favorite cricketer Anil Kumble, not someone of her family's choosing. Or at least that's what she thought. When a member of Meera's cricket team is injured a doctor by the name of Arjun Awasthi (Eijaz Khan) enters the picture, and Achrekar slowly begins to fall in love. What should mark the beginnings of a healthy relationship instead transforms into a rivalry between Arjun and an intangible opponent. Meanwhile Achrekar struggles to convince Anjun's father (Anupam Kher) that she can beat her sports addiction, and even pledges to give up cricket altogether at one point. Her ability to do this however is questionable. On the day of Meera's wedding she contemplates fleeing from the ceremony, not due to cold feet but because her favorite team is playing at the local stadium. While it is unclear whether or not Anjun can defeat his fiance's obsession with cricket, one thing is for sure: no other man could tolerate a game of love this brutal. Rating: N/A
