Architect Stephen Booker (Martin Sheen) is slowly losing his business, as his wife (Susannah York) is starting a new business venture. As the money starts to dry up and he discovers that new jobs are hard to come by, he is approached by Daniels (Albert Finney) who proposes that Booker utilize his skills to pinpoint the location of a bank vault from the sewer tunnel below. Booker angrily rejects Daniels' approach and insinuation.
But as circumstances get more dire financially, and especially after Booker is harassed by his bank manager, he starts having second thoughts and finally agrees to Daniels' plan- provided that no violence is used. The sewer entrance to the impenetrable bank vault sets off the alarms. But once the police arrive and see that there are no signs of disruption to the outside of the vault, they turn the alarm off for the night, declaring it faulty.
