Joining the San Fernando Valley to the heart of the city of Los Angeles, Laurel Canyon is a street that runs through the heart of the Hollywood Hills. The canyon is notable for its varied residents. Among its current residents is Jane (Frances McDormand), a legendary record producer, currently producing an album for a British band led by singer Ian (Allesandro Nivola), who is supposed to be her lover. Jane and the band are creating the album in her Laurel Canyon house where she has a recording studio.

Janes son Sam (Christian Bale) and his fiance Alex (Kate Beckinsale) are both recent graduates of Harvard medical school. They decide to move to Los Angeles to complete their studies. Jane has offered her Laurel Canyon home for them to stay in, promising that it will be vacant.

But when Sam and Alex arrive Jane and the Band are still working in Janes home recording studio to complete the album. Sam and Alex begrudgingly stay at Janes house until they can find an alternative place to live.

Few days later, unexpected incidents begin to take place, filling the house with tension and doubt.

Director Cholodenko does a great job exploring the complications around intimacy. Each of the characters changes in a way that is enlightening, whether significantly or subtly.

The film was released in 2002. It runs for 103 minutes
