One man could lead this team to gloryThat man was busy! Kicking and Screaming: A dream of being on a winning team

Since he was young Phil Weston has always wanted to be a star athlete, which is especially important since his father, Buck, is a sports fanatic. Unfortunately, though, Phil has failed miserably at every sport imaginable, disappointing his father, who is a soccer coach, and who rarely allows him to play in matches. In college the situation is no different, and Phil is rejected at every tryout, no matter the sport. After numerous failures, Phil decides he is athletically hopeless and leaves sports behind to open a vitamin store.

Years later, Phil becomes a father himself, and hopes his son, Sam, can achieve his childhood dreams of soccer stardom. Like Phil, Sam is coached by Buck. But Sam seems to be just like his father and spends spent far more time on the sidelines than on the field. Each opportunity Buck gives Sam to shine results in agonizing embarrassment. Frustrated, Buck trades his grandson to another team the much less successful Tigers.

Naturally Phil is a bit peeved. Rather than wasting energy begging Buck to reconsider, or merely wallowing in anger, he decides to buy the Tigers himself and become the team's coach. This is an impulsive and strange decision for a man with a self-admitted lack of athletic prowess, yet he is determined to prevail over Buck at least once in his lifetime.

Phil enlists the help of his neighbor, none other than famed Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, who will attempt to guide the rookie team owner to victory. That is a tough task however, since an initial meeting with the Tigers reveals their utter hopelessness. To overcome this deficit, Ditka enlists the help of two neighborhood Italian immigrants, who immediately take over the team. Other players soon adopt the mantra, Just pass it to the Italians.

While this attitude may win the Tigers a succession of matches, it is not particularly good for morale. More problematic, however, is that Phil begins adopting his father's cutthroat competitive zeal, and treats his son as a third-rate player. Phil not only loses favor with Sam, but also his wife Barbara (Kate Walsh), who has no qualms ending the marriage if Phil does not change his ways.

Kicking & Screaming was a modest success at box offices; with a budget of $45 million, it managed to gross over $56 million worldwide. The picture's soundtrack is chock-full of notorious jock jams including the venerable eighties song Chariots of Fire, Lets Get it Started by the Black Eyed Peas and many more. Ferrells family-friendly flick was nominated for 4 different Teen Choice Awards.
