Natalie Anderson (Elisabeth Harness) is a high school senior who has it all. She is a star on the tennis team, a socialite, and a straight A student. Natalie has also found her dream guy: a newcomer to the school named Rafael (Ignacio Serricchio). Her life is picturesque, but a routine biology assignment will soon turn Natalie's world upside-down.

A classmate named Keith Zetterstrom (Jesse McCartney) is Natalie's lab partner throughout the semester; he is melancholy and smart-alecky, yet strangely appealing to her. Although Natalie has a boyfriend, Keith methodically plots to win her heart, transforming his eccentricities into alluring and mysterious qualities. What begins as a seemingly innocent game of bowling soon becomes a full-fledged relationship.

Naturally, this displeases Rafael as Natalie slowly distances herself from him to spend more time with Keith. She becomes entangled in Keith's complex web of lies and manic behavior, all the while trying to understand what makes him tick. He is extremely fond of his dilapidated truck, that seems to accompany him throughout his travels in insanity. At one point Keith terrifies Natalie by allowing his yellow monstrosity to creep slowly toward a cliff's edge, with both of them laying in the truck's bed.

When Natalie discovers antidepressants in Keith's jacket she gains a new understanding of him, one that initially raises even more questions than it does answers. The strange boy's behaviors are not merely designed to shock and perplex those around him, but are the result of a troubling secret and its inevitable effect on his relationship not only with Natalie, but also the world itself.
