Adam Brody, most widely known as Seth Cohen from The O.C. (2003-2007) television series portrays a small time screenwriter on the rebound in 2007s In the Land of Women. The film marks Brodys big screen debut where he stars alongside seasoned actresses such as Meg Ryan and Olympia Dukakis.

Carter Webb (Brody) is a 26-year-old writer attempting to make it big in Hollywood. Waiting for his big break, Carter remains content writing sleazy scripts for soft-core adult movies. The living is not so bad, and its allowed him to score a hot supermodel girlfriend: Sofia (Elena Anaya). His seemingly happy world crumbles however when Sofia dumps him for Irish actor

Colin Farrell, saddening Webb further.

Desperately in need of relief Carter offers to look after his aging, mentally ill grandmother in suburban Detroit. The grandmother, Phyllis (Dukakis) has been phoning her daughter repeatedly complaining of illness, though doctors have not diagnosed any problems. While a trip to take care of an ailing relative may seem like work rather than relief, time away from Los Angeles is precisely what Webb desires. In between listening to Phyllis incoherent ramblings he hopes to complete an autobiographical screenplay 10 years in the making; Carter is convinced that this will be his best script yet, and will surely earn him fame.

After landing in Michigan the outwardly compassionate grandson arrives at Phyllis doorstep. In her dementia she slams the door shut immediately after opening it, but with some coaxing from outside allows Carter to enter. When Carter enters the home he finds it in complete disarray, and discovers that Phyllis has been starving herself for the past three weeks. Immediately he searches for food, only to find every item in the house stale. At this moment Webb realizes the necessity of his presence.

The neighborhood is not without its feminine distractions however. While taking out the trash the recently dumped writer meets teenage neighbor Lucy Hardwicke (Kristen Stewart). Despite the age gap, there is evidently some chemistry between the two. To Carters advantage Lucys mother, Sarah (Meg Ryan) approves of, and actually encourages her daughter to pursue the older attraction. Quite possibly afflicted with breast cancer, and in a rocky relationship with husband, Nelson (Clark Gregg), Sarah also attempts to move beyond a platonic relationship with Webb.

Yet somehow his grandmothers illness and a love triangle spanning multiple generations helps Carter reconcile the pain of losing Sofia, and quite possibly may provide him with material for his greatest writing yet. While at the surface this may appear to be your typical romantic drama, it may surprise you in a quite unpredictable way.

In the Land of Women is rated PG-13 for sexual content, thematic elements and language. Its runtime is 97 minutes.
