There are undoubtedly thousands of books and articles on love, dating, and marriage. Generally, these types of guides discuss how to find the right partner, how to rekindle passion in a relationship, or how to save a dying relationship. Rarely, if ever do they address how to force a partner to leave you within a specified period of time by utilizing the most annoying tactics possible. Yet that is the premise of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), a romance comedy from Donald Petrie, producer of Grumpy Old Men (1993) and Miss Congeniality (2000).

Kate Hudson of Almost Famous (2000), The Skeleton Key (2005), You, Me, and Dupree (2006), and Fools Gold (2008) notoriety is Andie Anderson, a journalist at Composure magazine, a fictional knockoff of Cosmopolitan. Andie is tired of writing about fashion or womens issues and wants to address political, social, and economic concerns as well. Her supervising editor is not so sure; when given an article about Tajikistani politics and culture she remarks that its an outstanding article but that it wont be published in Composure.

This leads Andie into a bet with her boss. She proposes to write a kind of investigative article examining how to get rid of an admiring man within just 10 days; if the article is successfully completed, her boss is willing to give Andie more creative freedom. With a deal sealed the reporter begins searching for a victim.

In parallel, Matthew McConaughey of The Wedding Planner (2001), Failure to Launch (2006), and Fool's Gold (2008) fame portrays advertising executive Benjamin Barry. Like Andie, Barry initiates an over the top bet with his boss in exchange for a promotion. However Benjamins task is the exact opposite of Andies. Rather than scare away a woman in 10 days, he must make an anonymous lady fall deeply in love with him. If Benjamin succeeds he will be put in charge of a high profile advertising campaign for a new diamond distributor, an account initially reserved for his boss.

However, two of Benjamins female coworkers are aware of both his bet and Andies and arrange for the two to meet, knowing that each is seeking an innocent target. Their scheme is a success and Ben and Andie begin dating. Andie begins implementing a laundry list of things she believes men unanimously hate. Some of those items include quickly moving in, redecorating the house with feminine items, and interrupting poker games with sappy, romantic comments in front of her faux boyfriends buddies.

Meanwhile Benjamin does his best to woo his new girl, caving in to every request and showering her with gifts and affection. Andie is baffled as to why the relationship continues, however with time it is of little importance: the two slowly fall into genuine love. Yet can a meaningful relationship develop out of one great lie?

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was an international success grossing over $177 million. It was nominated for both an MTV Movie Award and a Teen Choice Award. The film is rated PG-13 due to some sexually suggestive content with a runtime of 110 minutes.
