In this deliciously bitter sweet slice of life, and  semi autobiographical film, veteran director John Boorman meditates on the nature of childhood memories, the fragility of life at war, and British patriotism.

The action kicks in on the eve of the Second World War. We explore this fragile environment through the tender eyes of 9 years old Bill. It’s the story of this Boy, His family and the very specific times in Europe during this era. It also discusses the evolution of English society and the birth of a new middle class in British society, but for a child this was a magical and euphoric era, that’s what the movie tries to convey, mixing the joys of life with the horrors of war.
