“Herbie: Fully Loaded” is the sixth installment in Disney’s 40 year, consistently successful franchise. Herbie is a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own. Throughout the years the car has gone from owner to owner, won various races, and defended itself against foes. Most importantly, however, Herbie can respond and project emotions, indicating sadness, happiness, and anger by manipulating his body parts. In this fresh rendition Lindsay Lohan is Herbie’s latest owner, Maggie Peyton. Maggie descends from a long line of racecar drivers; secretly she wishes to pursue racing with the same fervor as the male members in her family. However her father, Ray is staunchly against this idea, partially due to a car accident Maggie had three years prior. Regardless of her father’s desires, Maggie insists that racing is in her blood, and that she must fulfill her dreams. The first college graduate in her family, she has just graduated and also landed a promising job at ESPN. She has a month before leaving to New York and as a graduation gift, Ray takes her to a junkyard and allows her to buy any car she desires. While she at first intends to purchase a Nissan 250Z, she ends up with falling in love with a 42 year-old Volkswagen instead, and purchases it for a mere $75. Soon after receiving the car Maggie discovers that it’s not quite ordinary. A note she finds in its glove compartment, presumably left by its former owner, states that the car’s name is Herbie. On her drive to longtime friend and auto mechanic Kevin (Justin Long of the “I’m a Mac” advertisements) the car begins to shockingly express itself. With a little TLC Kevin and Maggie are able to get the car back into tiptop shape and, whether her father likes it or not, onto the racetrack where the seemingly quaint car annihilates local street racing champions. It’s not long before Herbie moves up to the professional, NASCAR circuit. Yet fellow racer Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon) realizes that there is something awry with this classic compact and attempts to take it from Maggie by any means. Will he succeed? Will Maggie realize her racing dreams? NASCAR fans will be elated with cameo appearances by champion drivers such as Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Jarett, and Tony Stewart. Lindsay Lohan was awarded a Kids’ Choice Award for her performance in Herbie: Fully Loaded. The film was also nominated as Favorite Movie but lost to “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” It was a box office success earning more than $144 million in ticket sales worldwide. This movie is rated G and is suitable for all ages.
