The Worst Day of His Life Never Ended Groundhog Day: Who Says There's Only One Chance at Life?

Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a Pittsburgh news weatherman sent to the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil will either emerge, or retreat back into its burrow. Legend states that if the groundhog emerges spring will arrive early; if not, then one should expect six more weeks of winter weather. The historical accuracy of Punxsutawney Phil's forecasts are questionable at best.

Legend states that if the groundhog emerges spring will arrive early; if not, then one should expect six more weeks of winter weather. Connors is among the skeptics, and not exactly thrilled to travel in a severe snowstorm to Phil's distant location. Full of arrogance, he is not impressed by the town or it's people either, and tends to treat them with discontent. Rita (Andie MacDowell), the station's newscaster and their quirky cameraman, Larry (Chris Elliott) are along for the ride. The meteorologist has a crush on Rita, though his pompous attitude often disgusts her.

The trio arrives and covers the day's festivities as expected. Though before they can return to Pittsburgh the snow storm intensifies, blocking all major roads and forcing them to stay the night in Punxsutawney. Naturally, Connors is unhappy and spends the remainder of the day moping at the hotel. At night he falls asleep, and wakes up to the sound of Cher and Sonny Bono's 'I Got You Babe' playing on the clock radio.

That famous song would haunt him for days to come. He notices that the day's events are identical to the one before, precisely to the second. What he thought was a hallucination or bad dream, however, would occur each day: Connors was stuck in a time loop. Realizing that his actions have no consequences, since they will be erased the following day, he takes every opportunity to perform the rudest, most insane actions possible -- even suicide. Once he tires of extreme behavior, he adopts a kinder approach and discovers that optimism and good deeds are more rewarding than pessimism and unhappiness.

Since its release the film has become a fixture in popular culture, and nothing has duplicated its nature quite since. With a slim budget of $14 million, the picture grossed close to $80 million in ticket sales and earned an MTV Movie Award nomination.
