(mbc.net) The emperor of Rome, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) is nearing death and appoints a Hispano-Roman general named Maximus (Russell Crowe) to succeed his throne. This infuriates the emperor's son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who believes that he is Aurelius' rightful successor. Before Maximus can take power however Commodus slays the general's entire family, and Crowe's character is sold into slavery shortly thereafter.
While enslaved in North Africa Maximus becomes a renowned gladiator whom the public dubs 'Maximus the Merciful.' Throughout his struggles Maximus remains committed to avenging Commodus and reuniting with his long lost love, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen). Soon he will have his chance.
Gladiator won five Oscars, two Golden Globes, and an MTV Movie Award. The picture earned an astounding $457 million at the box office, deeming it a commercial success.
