Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006) is a sequel to its wildly popular predecessor, Garfield: The Movie (2004). Based on the classic comic strip created by cartoonist Jim Davis, the film features three central characters: a gluttonous, lasagna-crazed cat named Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray), his owner Jon (Breckin Meyer), and a dimwitted dog named Odie.

Unlike its cartoon and comic strip counterparts, Two Kitties is not animated. With the exception of Garfield and his look-a-like British prince (Tim Curry), all of the films characters are depicted by live actors. Even Odie is given a living, breathing on-screen counterpart. While Garfield remains animated, he makes the jump from 2D to 3D with the help of computer graphics. Two Kitties technical aspects are superb.

Readers of Davis comic strip will no doubt become reacquainted with their favorite childhood feline, while younger viewers discover a new classic. The storyline remains identical: Jon Arbuckle is a lonesome bachelor whose only companions are his cat and dog. Despite attempts to date various women Jon is consistently unsuccessful, oftentimes in part due to his overprotective and jealous cats antics. Jon has a somewhat secret crush on Liz (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Garfield and Odies veterinarian.

Garfield is a wisecracking, bloated cat whose favorite food is lasagna. When hes not eating or watching television he is harassing Odie, a speechless, seemingly unintelligent dog. Though salty, the fat cat enjoys Jons companionship and pampering. With that in mind, Garfield is troubled when Jon attempts to leave him behind while visiting Liz in the United Kingdom. Not willing to sit at home bored and alone, Garfield hides in Jons luggage and makes the overseas journey unbeknownst to him.

Upon arrival Jon discovers Garfields scheme and, as usual, begrudgingly accepts the situation. Anxious to explore his new territory, the orange cat begins roaming the streets of London until a royal servant captures him. Garfield is a tit for tat clone of a feline prince, who was kidnapped and dumped in a river by his heir, Lord Dargis (Billy Connolly). Dargis is furious that a cat rather than a human possesses his familys estate, and wishes to eliminate both the furry prince and all other animals residing there.

When Garfield arrives he meets the other animals who instantly realize he is not the prince. However, his presence ensures their continued residence at the estate, so they do their utmost to keep Garfield there showering him with the most luxurious treatment possible. However Garfield will soon meet his double and both will eventually battle the evil Lord Dargis for their livelihood. In the midst of all this confusion will Garfield make it back to the United States? Will Jon finally succeed in winning his love, Liz?

Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties is a cute, humorous, and fun story for both parents and children alike. Its PG rating ensues its suitability for most ages. Internationally the film grossed a highly impressive $141 million, making it a worldwide success. Its runtime is 86 minutes.
